    1. Does Fire and Ice USA dance on the ice? How is this done?

Yes, we dance directly on the ice. They use special shoes that grip the ice so that they can dance safely on the ice.

    2. Is dance ability restricted by the ice?

Dance ability is restricted only slightly by the ice. Most dance techniques are possible. Dancing on ice does however require members to have superior balance and control when executing routines on the ice. For this reason, all members participate in regular jazz or ballet classes during and outside rehearsals.

    3. Do you have to have ice skating experience?

No, ice skating ability is not a requirement. In fact, most members don't ice skate at all!

    4. Is there an upper age limit?

No, there is no upper age limit. You must be at least 18 years of age to participate but there is not upper limit. Typically team members in the past have ranged anywhere from 18 to 32, but that does not mean 32 is the upper limit.

    5. Does everyone have a chance to participate in the swimsuit calendar?

Yes, everyone has an opportunity to participate in all photo shoots, but it is not mandatory.

    6. Do you have to have modeling experience?

No, you do not have to have modeling experience. The team swimsuit calendar or poster is the first modeling experience for many members.

    7. What type of experience should I have?

Any form of dance or cheerleading experience is enough to audition. However some experience is necessary. During the audition you will be asked to demonstrate your ability to execute a double turn and various other dance techniques. You will not be required to demonstrate an axle or fouetté turns, however you will have an opportunity to show these techniques if you would like.

    8. If I have not danced in a while, should I audition?

Yes, regardless of how long it has been since you have danced, it is recommended that you at least attend the audition. Members undergo a rigorous summer dance and exercise program designed to shake the cobwebs off and prepare all members for the season. However, it is recommended that you attend the workshops before attending the audition to help get back into dancing again.

    9. How should I prepare for the audition?

    Dance.
It is recommended that you take dance classes before the audition in order to practice the dance techniques that you will be asked to demonstrate and to practice learning short routines quickly. Attending the audition workshops is an excellent way to prepare as well as to learn what to expect.

    10. What types of routines does Fire and Ice USA perform?

The team performs mainly jazz routines along with some hip-hop and novelty routines.

    11. Are gymnastics skills good to have?

Gymnastic skills are a plus but not required. The team often performs at non-ice venues where gymnastics can be incorporated. At the audition you will be allowed to demonstrate gymnastic skills only if you feel very confident in your abilities.

    12. What kind of photo should I turn in?

Professional photos are preferred but not necessary. The photo should include you only. The pose can be either full body or a headshot. The photo should be 8x10 or 5x7, in color or black and white. Photos will not be returned.  You will not be judged on your photo - they are for identification purposes only.

    13. Is travel a requirement?

Yes, some travel is required.  Fire and Ice USA is a national touring team. Members should be comfortable with flying in planes and driving long distances.  Traveling performances occur about 1-2 times per month and not all members are required to go every time.

    14. Are there height or weight requirements?

No, there are no specific height or weight requirements. Members are expected to maintain a well-rounded fitness regimen and to remain in good health and physical shape throughout the season. Your weight should be proportional to your body type and height.

    15. What type of shoes should I wear?

Jazz shoes are recommended. However you may want to bring tennis shoes or other dance shoes to test on the floor when you arrive.

    16. What should I bring to the audition?

It is recommended that you bring a cover up to wear during breaks to keep your muscles warm, personal items such as a mirror, makeup, brushes, toiletries, a towel, etc. You should also bring plenty of water and energy snacks.

    17. How long will the audition last?

There are usually 2 rounds of judging during the preliminary audition. The audition will end around 6pm.  The length of the audition depends on the number of candidates.

    18. Can my family and friends come to the audition to watch?

No, the audition is a closed audition - no exceptions. Media, VIP, judges and candidates ONLY are permitted entrance for the audition.

    19. Is carpooling recommended?

No, carpooling is not recommended. After each round of judging, those candidates who will not be advancing to the next round are requested to leave. If you and your carpool ride do not advance the same amount of rounds, then one of you will have to wait outside for a long time before your carpool is done and ready to go.

    20. Do returning members have to audition again?

Yes, all returning members must re-audition every year. Only inaugural members receive a bye through the first round. All spots on the team are considered open.

    21. How many spots on the team are available?

All spots on the team are available. There are 20 spots.

    22. Do members have to attend all rehearsals?

Yes, members must attend all rehearsals. During the summer rehearsals take place 2 times a week (Tuesday and Thursday nights).  After the season starts in mid-September rehearsals will reduce to Tuesday nights only. A rehearsal schedule will be passed out to the finalists.

What it's like to be a Member

Fire and Ice USA is the third professional San Diego dance team I've been on.  Since we don't represent one team in particular, we have so much freedom and flexibility to pick and choose where we want to perform. It's awesome, because we're out there not only to showcase what we can do as a team, but what we are capable of doing as individuals also.

The Fire and Ice USA website is like a free advertisement for all the girls on the team; companies can go there to hire specific girls for specialized jobs, based on what's on their bio/resume. Whether you're a model, actress, singer, or something else...there's a pretty good chance someone out there's going to see you and want to work with you.

One of the coolest things that sets us apart from many of the local teams out there is that we have the opportunity to travel all year long! Let me tell you, you DO NOT want to miss out on next year's Vegas trip! We had a blast!

Well, to all of you out there who are auditioning...BEST OF LUCK TO YOU, and see ya on the dance floor!

I’ve been a member of Fire and Ice USA since it was founded two years ago, and in that time, I’ve had a lot of great experiences.  Some of the most memorable for me are the Monday Night Football appearances — which have taken us all over Southern California, the community appearances — everything from the San Diego County Fair to the Holiday Bowl Big Bay Balloon Parade, and the charity events — especially the annual Helen Woodward Animal Center HOPE Telethon and the United Cerebral Palsy Golf Tournament. I’ve also met a lot of great people through Fire and Ice USA.  Everyone on the team is a professional, and everyone is there because they want to dance!  So if you love to dance, love to have a good time, and love to meet new people—Fire and Ice USA is for you! Good luck at the auditions!

Being a member of Fire and Ice USA has been an amazing experience for me. Because we are an independent traveling team, we get to perform for diverse events and crowds. At first I thought that it would be better to get involved with a program that represented one specific team, but now I really see the
value in what we do. We have had the opportunity to perform at a variety of beautiful venues for so many exciting sports teams and organizations. I love being able to read off my list of appearances from this past year, because we have covered so many arenas in the entertainment industry.

This team is a great way to get started as a model/actress, and we have all had amazing opportunities arise this year. Because of my membership on this team, I now do liquor promotions for Jack Daniels, Southern Comfort, Tuaca, and Amarula. I just recently got hired to do promotions for Guinness, Red Stripe, Smirnoff and Budweiser. I perform in a live music show as a lead dancer at a variety of clubs and bars in San Diego, and I am also a solo
artist at a new ongoing cabaret show downtown. This year I have had countless
modeling and acting offers, and I am shooting a 2005 calendar next month for a
private corporation. As a member of this team you are always in the public
eye, which exposes you to endless networking possibilities, and really gets
you in touch with the right people.

Aside from all of the perks, I have made so many wonderful friends this past
year. We really work hard and support each other at practice, at performances,
and also in life!! The management/coaches are so uplifting and every practice
is a healthy and comfortable learning experience. My favorite part of the year
was definitely the traveling, which we will be doing a lot more of in the
future. Our trips to Vegas and Northern California were amazing performance
and team bonding opportunities. I am looking forward to an even bigger and
better team next season, and I hope you will consider being a part if it! Good
luck at auditions, and remember to smile, have fun, and give it your best!!
